Blast from the Recent Past

These photographs were taken a little under two years ago (11th Dec, 2005), just before the concert at St. Joseph's High School in Bangalore. I couldn't upload them earlier. But they are important. So here they are:

Parousia

Parousia (L to R): Britto (rhythm guitars), Jason (keyboard), Naveen (lead guitars). Bryan (bass), Ranjith (vox) and Rateesh (drums) had not yet arrived.

Motherjane

Motherjane (L to R): Baiju M. (lead guitars), John (drums), Suraj Mani (vox), Clyde (bass), Deepu (rhythm guitars)

Update: Added a link to a Riff's concert review.

Official Bootlegs?

Nokia - one of the sponsors of the ongoing Independence Rock have announced a novel contest as part of the classic event - they are encouraging headbangers to use mobile phones to capture videos/audios of the concerts (band interviews as well) and upload them on a special site created for this event. Nice! They also encourage creating mixes (???). But anyways, I guess it's another form of creativity. There are prizes for the best bootlegs as well! They also have listening room where you can listen to many of these. The site has other user-contributed content as well. Check out Parousia's section on the site for some interesting practice session videos.

I for one whole-heartedly welcome these! A lot of great Indian bands don't tour and so people in one city often don't know the good bands in other cities (unless of course the person is a committed headbanger) and often times bootlegs are the only way to listen to some of these bands. Music Tantra, a site I've blogged about earlier, have a page devoted to videos and audio bootlegs. We need more of this!

Another thing that is sorely missing are concert reviews and set-lists. Many people do post these, but they usually do it in forums that aren't easy to find. If we're to bring more exposure to these bands, we need to write and blog more about them - and (if I say this for selfish reasons), post more bootlegs.

Check out my first bootleg - Parousia performing a cover of Deep Purple's Sometimes I feel like screaming. Unfortunately, the audio quality is terrible. I had recorded it on a Sony Ericsson K750i, which has the microphone on the opposite side of the camera lens - probably the only flaw on an otherwise great phone! But there are better phones now, with much better audio and video recording capabilities. A look at some of the bootlegs of the recent Ed Fest in Bangalore is evidence of that.

Update:
Added few other interesting links on the site. Also I forgot to mention this in my earlier posting - I got information regarding the listening room via Gigpad.

"Independence" Raackaa??

Another set of fine bands out of the hometown ... at Le Rock (Ill take Legends anytime of the week and twice on Saturday) ... Parousia, Extinct Reflections, Caesar's Palace is all I saw ... and ... much to my displeasure, Parousia did not make it to the Palace this time (JZack ... Singapore could've waited da!!) ... but Parousia did a fine set ... "Whats Goin On??" kicked some ass ... Navin wears Fender Stratocaster / Britto with a Squier hereon...

And then the bummer of the night ... and since it was independence rock ... the house was in mr farhad wadia (of "Could we please have the stage on Farhad Wadia" fame ... IRock, Rang Bhavan, August 15th or 16th/1997 ...) ... shhheeesh!!

Met with Bryan ... extensively talking about SX, Rush, DT ... the new albums ...

Two New Features Added

We've just added two features (one new, one not quite) on the site:

1. Calendar of Rock Concerts in India (Link):
There are several e-zines (like Gigpad, eMusicPost, Music Tantra) that provide information about upcoming Rock events in India. Then why add one more? Well, none of them, really offer any means of subscribing to these events. As a user of Google Calendar, I've seen the advantages of having an iCal feed for these kind of things. The above mentioned sites are doing a great job of posting up-to-date information about events and I hope they provide an iCal version of these events too so that I can subscribe to them. But until they do, we'll try our best to keep this one up-to-date. You can subscribe to the above calendar by clicking here. If you would like to volunteer to add information about such events to this calendar, do send one of us an email. You can email me at satchit gmail com.

2. Search Engine for Rock Music from India (Link):
Have you ever tried searching for Moksha on Google and found yourself lost among search results that didn't really have anything to do with that Classic heavy metal band from Chennai? Well, if you use the above search engine, that shouldn't happen anymore. This search engine only searches sites that are related to Indian Rock music and hopes to deliver highly relevant results. This is again going to be an organic feature that hopes to get better with time. If you would like to suggest more sites that can be added for the above engine to crawl, or would like to volunteer in adding more such sites, send one of us an email.

The sidebar on this blog will always have a link to each of these features. Hope you find the above helpful. We also have many more interesting features in the pipeline. So do check this site often.
